Rod Harrier, author of chronologicalbiblestudies.com the best chronological Bible studies

Welcome! I’m the author, Rodney Harrier, a Bible teacher who is passionate about the Word of God and helping people understand it. I have been where you are (see my story). A chronological study of the Bible brought me from confusion to clarity and conviction, and it can do the same for you. If you haven’t done so already, sign up and join me as I lead you on your journey.

Here are 3 reasons why these are the Best Chronological Bible Studies

1. You can easily read through the Bible in one year. When you understand it, they’re the best chronological Bible studies!

Revving up to read the Bible in one year using the best chronological Bible studies

Have you ever started to read the Bible but ran out of gas? You were all revved up, made it through Genesis and Exodus until the Tabernacle was being built. Then you saw a bunch of cattle and sheep in your way headed for sacrifice, and your journey stalled. We’ve all been there.

What can we do about it? Here’s our plan: sign up. You’ll get our daily emails to help you make it through the Bible in one year. In each one there will be a brief introduction to that day’s Bible lesson and a link. You’ll also get encouragement to keep you going, even through the tough books like Leviticus.

Ah, but how would you know the significance of Christ’s death on the cross or what holiness means without it? The Bible studies in Leviticus are easy to understand and rich in spiritual truth. You can get your vehicle going again and make it through the Bible in one year. Wouldn’t that be fantastic? Isn’t this how you’d feel?

Completing the Bible in one year is like the feeling of completing the climb up a tall mountain--exhilarating! You won!

2. They are historically chronological, and they seek to keep the message of each Biblical author intact.

Man reading from the chronological Bible studies, using the best chronological Bible studies format

With most chronological Bible reading guides, the Scriptures are cut and pasted together in the extreme, so you are constantly flipping back and forth through your Bible. As a result, you lose the understanding of how the different texts are connected. Other chronological Bibles and reading guides join passages that seem thematically similar but aren’t sequential. Instead, our one-year daily chronological Bible studies move to another passage when there’s a natural change in the narrative. This approach helps our understanding and respects all of the Bible as God’s Word.

3. Reading the Bible chronologically and our daily lessons bring you from confusion to clarity and conviction.

So, attests Bryan Osborne from Answers in Genesis. Read how he helped open the minds of public high school students in The Power of Chronology.

Are there things about God that are confusing to you? Do you struggle with understanding the order of events and passages in the Bible? Like Bryan’s students, I’ve been there, and you can read my story.

Using our Best Chronological Bible Studies will help you explain salvation to others

Note from Rodney Harrier, the author and administrator of this site: A long-awaited prayer has been answered. From the beginning, when I was posting these Bible studies, I thought it would be cool to offer it in other languages. The cost of hiring a translator was prohibitive. Now, I’ve learned that Google Translate has a 94% success rate for correctly interpreting English to Spanish. If you want to read this page or my blog in Spanish, click on the floating flag. If someone you know would like to, they can also click the floating flag. Please tell me if you have any difficulties understanding it.

Complete the Bible in One Year and Understand It

Where are we at in our Chronological Journey?

January 18 (day 18), we return to the book of Genesis. From Job, we learned about Job’s life of integrity and God’s sovereignty. In this section of Genesis, we learn about a particular people group that God chooses to bless. The Patriarch of that people was Abraham. From Abraham, we will learn about a life of faith. There were many failures along the way, and his faith was tried, so he would learn to trust God. I can relate to that. How about you? Join us and be challenged to trust God, even when he doesn’t explain everything.

True joy is found in Jesus

If you are in a different place in the chronological Bible, that’s’ okay. You can follow it at your own pace. In the menu above, you can find calendar dates or days of the year and begin where you wish. But, we make it easier to read the Bible in one year and understand just by signing up. Then you will get reminders and encouragement for your journey.

Answers about the Chronological Bible

What is a Chronological Bible?

The Biblical events, people, and writings are arranged in Chronological order, unlike standard Bibles.

Why is the Bible not chronological?

About 1/2 of the Bible is chronological.

  • The historical section from Genesis–Esther is mostly chronological.
  • Israel’s prophets were, for the most part, not interested in chronology because their Jewish audience already knew their history. Instead, the prophets proclaimed the messages of God much as a minister gives sermons.
  • In the New Testament, the gospel accounts of the life of Christ and the book of Acts are mostly chronological.
  • The book of Revelation is apocalyptic but the events for the most part are sequential.

The Importance of the Chronological Bible Format

Bible Chronology helps you know why you believe what you believe

It’s almost incredible that so many people don’t know the basic content of the Bible, and many are unaware of the order in which the events occur. Because of this, young adult Christians (and some not so young) can go through a crisis of belief.
This gets personal with me. Maybe my story is like yours. Read about it here:

What are the pros and cons of the chronological Bible format?

The Pros:

  1. You can see people and events in their historical context.
  2. You can also discover why prophets addressed hot button issues and how God felt about them. This is often eye-opening. You have an “ah ha, I get it now” moment.
  3. You don’t need a commentary to explain everything to you when you can see it yourself. Other benefits are given below.

The Cons:

1. Repetition. Because Scripture writers were sometimes contemporaries, they wrote about the same things and even copied some word for word. In some cases, there are three or four records of the same event. This can give interesting insights or make for some tedious reading. Note: I am considering simplifying the texts. Readers could read the same text multiple times or choose the most complete version. I would provide links to the other versions.

2. Different versions of the same texts read together can give the impression that errors exist. One or more of them may seem wrong. There are reasonable explanations for the variations, but it can shake the faith of some people. God had a purpose for the differences. If they were 100% the same coming from different writers, wouldn’t that seem suspicious?

3. The message of each Bible author is subverted to get an absolute chronological order of the text. This interrupts the flow and message of each book. As you may know, we take a different approach to respect all of the Bible as God’s Word.

4. Chronological Bible texts are cut and pasted together to be technically in sequential order. However, they don’t flow together well without editorial comments. That is why our chronological Bible studies make the transition between texts when there is a natural break in narration.

5. Some chronological Bible reading guides and chronological Bibles are not necessarily historically based as much as thematically based. This can be a helpful teaching guide but interrupts the narrative message of each book. It is arbitrary and violates the intent of the Biblical writers. For instance, John 1 is put together with Genesis 1. You can see thematically they are similar, but the theme of Genesis is different than the theme of John.

Why do many ministers not want you to study the Bible chronologically?

  1. Because it does not follow the order of the standard Bible. However, you should know that the order of the Bible has changed from the original to make it easier to teach. It is the text of the Bible which is inspired, not the order we affix to it.
  2. Because it does not respect the narrative of the Bible. Most chronological reading guides excessively rearrange scripture texts for technical chronology, ignoring the message of the Biblical writers. All the Word of God is important, even those we don’t understand. There are theologians and commentaries to help us. As you know, we take a different approach that respects all the messages of God’s Word.
